About Indonesia
The world’s largest archipelago, Indonesia is home to dense, subtropical rainforests and a vibrant culture. Prominent islands (because it has over 17,000!) include Java, Sumatra, Borneo and Sulawesi, each with their own mini-ecosystem. With up to 130 active volcanoes spread across its islands, Indonesia’s terrain is rugged, covered by lush rainforests and fast-flowing rivers. The forests are home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including elephants, orangutans, tigers, parrots, monkeys and even massive rafflesia flowers! The islands of Indonesia are a tapestry of race, religion, culture, tradition and communities. Guests will find people of various religions and communities existing in harmony, often sharing meals, drinks and stories. Each region has something unique to offer in terms of art and culture – take for example its different dyeing, embroidery and textiles like batik, ikat and songket are popular with connoisseurs, designers and fashionistas alike. Indonesia is also blessed with rich, deep troves of folklore and mythology – brilliantly depicted through iconic performances, particularly its Legong and Bedhaya dances. Indonesia’s culinary brilliance needs no introduction, or testament. The food scene here is colourful, aromatic and spicy enough to rejig the Scoville scale – though it varies from one region to another. Bold and fiery flavours dominate in Sumatra, while Java balances the heat with palm sugar. Bali is the best of both worlds, incorporating fresh and zesty spices without going overboard with the heat. Tuck into a bowl of rendang or grab a bite of gulai to know firsthand why Indonesia was known as ‘the spice islands’!
Things to do in Indonesia
Indonesia is brimming with attractions and there’s plenty to do, see and experience! Hike through popular trails in the rainforest or stumble across lost ones, climb up the volcanoes for one-of-a-kind thrill, and head to the Komodo National Park to walk with the Komodo dragons. Then, visit the quirky Kelimutu Lakes followed by a visit to Danau Toba – world’s biggest crater lake. Sign up for dive charters at the popular Raja Ampat and meet schools of fishes – some shy and flitting away, some inquisitive and checking out divers. Or, island hop on a ‘phinisi’ – Indonesian double-masted sailing schooner – and soak in island vibes of centuries past. Cultural activities further elevate a stay in Indonesia. Visit the vibrant local markets of Pasar Baru and Pasar Seni, attend Kecak and Wayang Kulit performances, and sample mouthwatering flavours of nasi goreng and satay. Then, explore the iconic temple complexes of Borobudur and Prambanan, marvel at the exquisite craftsmanship past on display. Head to villages to get a taste of indigenous life, their harmonious lifestyle and learn of their tales – otherworldly and otherwise. Not everything about Indonesia is fast-paced though. Guests can always choose to have a slow serene day, where they do nothing but sunbathe on Bali’s powdery sands, have romantic beach picnics and take long walks on the shores as the sun sets on the Pacific. Sometimes, it’s these little things that are endearing, but often the source of nostalgia that has travellers coming back for seconds and thirds.
Best time to visit Indonesia
Indonesia is a tropical wonderland and unsurprisingly, its weather is as temperamental as its volcanoes. When it rains, it pours; but when it doesn’t, it makes for amazing days marked by sunny skies, cool breezes and plenty of fun outside. The dry season, running from April to October, is widely considered the best time to visit Indonesia. Outdoor activities are fun, thanks to plenty of sunshine and cool winds. That said, occasional showers cannot be entirely ruled out. Weather aside, cultural events, festivals and popular holidays are a great time to visit Indonesia too. Visitors get to witness lively performance, parades, sporting activities and more as they dig into a savoury street food.
